Fewest payments to settle:
How the math works
Each expense is divided equally among the people you tick for it (so the wine only splits among the wine drinkers). Everyone ends with a net balance — paid minus owed — and the calculator matches the biggest debtor with the biggest creditor until everyone is at zero. That produces the minimum number of payments, which is why six friends usually settle a whole trip in two or three transfers instead of fifteen.
Not sure how the group should split things? Our guide to splitting expenses on a group trip covers the four split methods and when each is fair, and the Airbnb cost-splitting guide handles the couples-vs-solo-travelers problem. Prefer a spreadsheet? Use the free Google Sheets template.
